GOOD TO KNOW

Questions about renting touring skis.

All questions in the FAQ →

Do I need my own touring boots?

No, you can rent touring boots from us. Touring bindings usually need a touring boot with matching inserts. If you bring your own boots, we check in the shop whether they fit the binding.

Are skins and ski crampons included?

Yes. The touring ski set includes skins, ski crampons and poles.

What is in the Safety Set?

Avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel and backpack. The avalanche transceiver is also available on its own, and the airbag backpack on its own or together with the Safety Set.

Will you show me how the avalanche transceiver works? Yes, we will briefly show you the device at pick-up. The guides offer avalanche courses, more at Freeride & tours.
When can I pick up the equipment?

On request, from 15.00 the evening before, in both shops: Piazza Gottardo and Gemsstockbahn.

Can I switch from touring skis to piste skis?

Yes. You can switch equipment during the rental period at no extra charge, for example from touring skis to piste skis. Return and swap work in both shops.

Is insurance included?

The rental prices do not include insurance. It costs an additional 10% of the rental price.

When and where do I pay?

In the shop at pick-up. You only pay for the actual rental period.

Do I need a guide for a ski tour?

If you have experience and can assess the route, conditions and avalanche danger yourself, you plan your tour yourself. If that is unfamiliar to you, you are better off with a guide: the mountain guides of Andermatt Guides adapt the tour to the current conditions. You can also book them at our shop at Piazza Gottardo.

When is the best time for ski tours and haute routes?

According to Andermatt Guides, March and April are ideal for ski tours and haute routes around Andermatt.

What is a haute route?

A multi-day ski traverse with nights in mountain huts. The Urner Haute Route, for example, runs over five days from Realp to Engelberg, the highest point being the Sustenhorn.

What equipment do I need for a haute route?

The complete ski touring equipment with Safety Set, plus crampons, ice axe and climbing harness. We rent all of it to you, including larger airbag backpacks with 40 litres.

Do I have to bring the equipment back to Andermatt after the haute route? No. For a surcharge you can deposit it at the destination in Engelberg at Arena Sport; we collect it there. More on that at Haute Route.
How fit do I need to be for a haute route?

The Urner Haute Route is for experienced ski tourers with very good stamina: up to 1500 metres of ascent per day, descents up to 40 degrees and basic high-alpine knowledge. For beginners, Andermatt Guides offer courses, such as the Ski Tour Basic course or the ski mountaineering course.

Where do I learn to use avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel? In the avalanche courses and warm-up days of Andermatt Guides, more at Avalanche courses (opens in a new tab).
